Mr McCartney said,

“The DCAL Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has announced the beginning of a consultation into how over £36m can be used to improve soccer infrastructure across the north.

“I took the opportunity during the announcement to ask the Minister if Derry City would be eligible to apply to the fund.

“The Minister confirmed that this would be case and they can apply on an equal basis to other clubs across the North.

“The aim of the consultation is to increase the quality of stadia across the North, improve safety standards at these venues and help integrate clubs with their local communities.

“The consultation over the next 12 weeks will be an opportunity for clubs, supporters and other interested parties to help shape how this money is spent.

“The success of both Irish teams to qualify for Euro 2016 is testament to the popularity of soccer and this investment could make future qualifications more regular.

“I would call on local clubs to engage with the consultation and ensure their voices are heard so we can improve the experience for players and fans alike.”
