“Representatives from the Sports Forum, Sport NI, IFA, GAA, and Ulster Rugby attended the Finance Committee meeting this week and discussed proposals to provide rates relief for amateur sports clubs.

“In the proposed Bill by Daithí McKay he made it clear that 100 per cent rates relief would apply to all parts of clubs apart from bars – that means stands, changing areas and playing facilities.

“That would apply to all amateur sports clubs.

“The minister’s proposal as it currently stands would have an adverse impact on rugby clubs in particular as they are more likely to have bar facilities.

“We need to see a positive outcome for amateur sports by the end of the current Assembly term.

“For that to happen we need to reach consensus so that rugby or any other sport is not adversely affected.”
