Sinn Féin’s MEP Martina Anderson will be among the hosts at an awards ceremony on Saturday where the European Citizen’s Prize will be presented to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.
“I was proud to have nominated Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for the prestigious European Citizen’s Prize for its commitment to reconciliation.
“I am also deeply honoured to be co-hosting this Saturday’s award ceremony in Cashel alongside my fellow Sinn Féin MEPs as well as Comhaltas director general, Labhrás Ó Murchú, and Francis Jacobs from the European Parliament’s information office in Ireland.
“Comhaltas is a fantastic organisation and thoroughly deserves this award for its promotion of the Irish traditional music throughout the world.
“This particular accolade recognises groups who have particularly distinguished themselves in strengthening integration, openness to others and the development of mutual understanding.
“Comhaltas certainly meets those requirements, particularly during the historic Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Derry in 2013 which brought all communities in the city together.”
Gearóid Ó hEára, co-ordinator of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013, said;
“I am looking forward to attending the presentation ceremony on Cashel to see Comhaltas receive the European Citizen’s Award.
“I congratulate my colleague Martina Anderson for nominating Comhaltas for this award and for her ongoing support and encouragement of the organisation.
“Everyone who attended Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Derry in 2013 will know the fantastic work Comhaltas does and I will continue to work with Comhaltas to bring the Fleadh back to the city.” Ends/Críoch
