Ms Anderson said;
“At today’s sitting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs I voted in favour of the European Parliament opening negotiations with the European Council on two very important files dealing with legal highs.
“Both these files are an important part of dealing with the increasing threat posed by these toxic substances.
“Every week across the EU approximately two new legal high substances are discovered.
“One particularly positive aspect to the legislation is the sharing of information and best practices in dealing with legal highs between the member states.
“Progress on these files have been held up in the Council since the beginning of the of the parliamentary term.
“However, the vote today should illustrate the European Parliament’s intent intent in pushing forward with this legislation in a timely manner as part of much broader strategy to tackle legal highs.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
