A coordinated financial package should be put in place to secure the future of City of Derry Airport, Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said.
The party’s spokesperson for tackling regional inequalities was commenting after a Sinn Féin delegation also including Donegal TD Padraig MacLochlainn met with airport officials today.
Martina Anderson said: “City of Derry Airport continues to provide vital connectivity for the whole North West, particularly while we await the completion of the A6 and A5 road projects.
“It is in a unique position on the island of Ireland as it services passengers from North and South.
“And while Derry City and Strabane District Council provides an annual subvention to the airport and the Executive recently confirmed significant financial support, more assistance is required, especially in light of the pressures caused by the Covid pandemic.
“In particular, the Dublin government commitment to fund an air route between Derry and Dublin must be fulfilled. This route will provide vital connectivity for Derry and the northwest to Dublin, and by extension, the rest of the world.
“Given the crucial role played by the airport, a coordinated financial commitment to support it should also be put in place by the Irish Government, the British Government, the Executive and the Councils in Derry/Strabane and Donegal.”
