Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has praised the crew of the Irish naval vessel, LÉ Samuel Beckett, for rescuing almost 250 refugees from the Mediterranean.
“The crew of the Irish naval vessel, LÉ Samuel Beckett have taken part in a rescue mission today in the Mediterranean and saved the lives of 242 people.
“This vessel was only deployed in the Mediterranean last week and it is clear they have already made a huge difference, saving hundreds of lives.
“This follows the life-saving work of the crews of the LÉ Eithne and LÉ Niamh who between them have saved the lives of more than 7,000 men, women and children in the Mediterranean.
“The international community has a responsibility to act immediately to address the growing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean and across Europe and prevent further loss of life.”
