Anderson raises availability of drug to tackle opioid addiction

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has written to the Health Minister and Chief Executive of the Western Trust about the availability of a medication to help tackle opioid abuse in Derry.
The Foyle MLA said:
“There is a growing problem in Derry and other areas of abuse of highly addictive opioids which have sadly led to an increasing number of deaths.
“There is a real need for decisive action to help tackle opioid abuse in Derry.
“Families of those battling opioid abuse that I have spoken to have raised difficulties around the availability of a medicine called Subutex in Derry which is used for withdrawal from opioid addiction.
“I have now written to the Health Minister and Chief Executive of the Western Trust to ask about the availability of this drug and to call for concerted action to tackle this issue, including the development of a centre of excellence to deal with addiction in Derry.” Ends/Críoch
