Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed plans to build 3,000 new homes in Derry.
Martina Anderson was commenting as local developer, the Braidwater Group, announced its intention to build a 250 acre development, known as The Cashel, near Coshquin.
She said: “There is a huge need for additional social and affordable homes in this city so plans for a mixed-use development on this scale are very welcome.
“There is also an onus on developers to ensure that new developments are beneficial to the local community so I again welcome Braidwater’s plans to include new community buildings, schools, retail and convenience facilities in the development. Trees are also to be planted as part of a bio-diversity drive to make the project carbon neutral.
“This will be the largest development of its kind anywhere in the North for ten years. It represents a multi-million investment which will provide a huge boost to the building sector and local economy.
“The planning application is now at the community consultation stage so I would obviously urge people to make their views known as part of that process in the coming period.”
