Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has said the British government is clearly still intent on covering up its role in the conflict after Britain’s information watchdog ruled that a report calling for the shakeup of the RUC will remain secret more than 45 years after it was written.
The Foyle MLA said:
“In 1973, the Morton Report, which was ordered by M15 recommended a shake-up of the RUC Special Branch.
“Now the Information Commissioner’s Office (IC0) have said the report does not have to be disclosed.
“Academics from across Ireland and Britain had requested the release of this report but now, after 18 months of deliberation, the ICO have now said it cannot be released.
“This is symptomatic of Britain’s approach to dealing with its role in the conflict and the role of its agents and proxies.
“This is the same approach that id denying access to truth to grieving families bereaved by British state violence. This approach needs to end.”
“The British government is attempting to present itself as an independent arbitrator in the conflict but at the same time it is using every tool at its disposal to block its role.”
