Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has said the British government has a responsibility to deal with the legacy of the past.
“The comments by former senior Tory MP and NIO minister Michael Mates revealed Britain’s true intentions when he said that there are files in the possession of the British government which will never be released.
“This shows how hollow the commitment made by Theresa Villiers was when she said there would be full disclosure.
“Clearly the British government never intended to deliver on that commitment.
“The British government was a party to the conflict and its forces, agents and their surrogates in unionist death squads who targeted and killed civilians have a responsibility to deal with the legacy of the past.
“They have a particular responsibility to the families of victims of state violence and they need to step up to the plate and release the information needed which can help families.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support relatives in whatever way they are trying to achieve closure.”
