‘British must honour Legacy obligations’ – McCartney

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney made the call after the Lord Chief Justice Declan Morgan today publicly criticised the lack of progress on his proposal, adding that the State has a legal obligation to ensure that legacy inquests take place.

“Sinn Féin met the Lord Chief Justice on two occasions to discuss his proposals for the release of funds guaranteed under the Fresh Start Agreement for legacy inquests. He has called for £5m a year over five years for legacy inquests.

“However, the British Government has refused so far to make the funding available to the most senior judge in the state to run the courts.

“Meanwhile families are being denied the truth and access to justice and many are now waiting more than four decades for inquests into the killing of their loved ones.

“That is wrong and unacceptable.

“Sinn Féin will continue to support the families who are being denied truth and I’m calling again on the British Government to honour their obligations, release the funding and end the cover up.”
