Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the proposals offered by European Council President Donald Tusk, to British Prime Minister David Cameron in terms of Brexit is pandering to the Britain’s right-wing agenda and a race to the bottom.
“Sinn Féin wants to see the creation of a social Europe, a Europe with democracy at its core and a Europe that is closer to citizens.
“It is clear that the right-wing agenda of these institutions and several EU leaders is being put before the needs of citizens.
“The failed policies of deregulation, austerity, discrimination and scapegoating are at the heart of the “EU Reform” agenda heading into February’s Council.
“Cameron and Tusk’s vision for Europe is that of a race to the bottom and total disregard for the concepts of human rights and equality.
The Sinn Féin MEP continued,
“Along with the attack on workers’ and migrants rights contained in the Tusk proposals, the agenda of the British Government is to undermine Human Rights as evident in its proposed repeal of the Human Rights Act – which give effect to the European Convention of Human Rights. The legal opinion presented to the Brexit: Rights and Wrongs Conference which I hosted last Friday proved that this is in fact a breach of the Good Friday Agreement.
“Whilst the EU is in need of radical reform, It’s clear that these proposals would push the EU in the wrong direction. The European institutions can only be changed from within – and not outside – the EU.
“In most international agreements, disputes or otherwise, it’s all about the economy stupid, in the case of BREXIT, it’s all about Human Rights Stupid.” CRÍOCH/END
