Sinn Féin Foyleside Councillor Eric McGinley has called on parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts following a number of incidents in the Ballymagroarty area over the past few weeks.
He said “Large groups of young people are gathering in fields to the rear of Friel Close and Gogarty Close, many of them have been observed drinking alcohol and causing anti community behaviour.
“Residents have been in touch with Sinn Féin regarding the behaviour of those gathering. In some instances, wheelie bins have been stolen and burnt. High levels of noise at night is also causing stress for residents living nearby.
“One child had to receive medical assistance a number of weeks ago after being found highly intoxicated in the field.
“Residents I have spoken to believe that many of those in attendance are not from the area and have been seen arriving to the area in taxis.
“I have been in contact with the both the PSNI and Council Safety Wardens and have also been in close contact with community workers who are also trying to address the matter.
“I would urge parents to be mindful about their children’s whereabouts when they are out at the weekend. And I would also ask that residents contact either the community safety wardens or police as soon as groups begin to gather in the field.
“I will be raising the matter further with the PSNI and other agencies at the next Neighbourhood Safety Team meeting.
