Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said a coordinated approach is needed across Europe to combat fuel poverty.
Speaking from a major conference of MEPs in Bratislava, Ms Anderson said;
“With rising energy costs more and more people across Europe are experiencing fuel poverty.
“It is simply unacceptable in 2016 that people should be faced with the choice of whether to heat or eat.
“A number of EU member states have put in place measures to tackle fuel poverty and international energy companies cannot be allowed to ride roughshod over those measures.
“It is important the EU supports renewable and affordable energy to fight fuel poverty.
“We need a common approach to tackling fuel poverty and I look forward to playing a role in that. I reminded MEPs that the majority of people in the North voted to remain in the EU and that vote must be respected so we can work together to tackle this and other important issues.”
