Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell is calling on Transport NI to fix the safety railings on Eastway Road, which have been damaged over the Christmas period, as a matter of priority.
“I worked with the DOE a number of years ago to have these safety railings erected as there were a number of near misses with school children crossing the road to get to either St Cecilia’s or St Johns primary and play school.
The railings act as a safety buffer for residents living in lower Creggan and people going to the local schools or the Ráth Mór shopping centre.
I have been in contact Transport NI today to have the railings fixed as a matter of priority. At present they are lying on the footpath causing an obstruction and people with prams have to move out onto the road to get past.
