Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Cooper has said that all musicians in the city should be adequately recompensed for their contribution to major events in the city. He was speaking in the wake of concerns raised by some musicians regarding Derry City Councils recruitment of entertainers for the Clipper events in June:
“As a director of City of Culture and the party’s lead on legacy I am more than aware of the contribution made by local musicians to the success of 2013 and the building of Derry’s long term reputation as a hotspot for live music and talent.
This should be recognised by council and others by affording the same level of pay to musicians as will be provided to other staff assisting with events such as Clipper. Whether the acts performing at Clipper are upcoming or established acts, it is vital that they are afforded appropriate levels of pay”
