Cllr. McGinley said: “Following on from the city being awarded Fairtrade status last year it would be a logical progression for the Council to support a campaign for this recognition to be achieved at a district level.
The Fairtrade system benefits producers in the developing world by guaranteeing them a minimum price which covers the cost of sustainable production and a premium which allows them to build social and economic development within their own communities.
Citizens of the Derry City and Strabane District Council area can help developing countries by purchasing Fairtrade products locally and making a meaningful contribution to the economy of local communities.
Council can play a key role in heightening awareness of the campaign’s objectives as well as lending practical support and I would encourage local workplaces and community organisations to join with us in our efforts to achieve Fairtrade status for the district.
