Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has expressed concern at delays in implementing the childcare strategy and called for urgent action.
Speaking after meeting the Education Minister, the Foyle MLA said:
“I am alarmed at the timeline and the limited resources within the Department of Education to progress the childcare strategy.
“The Minister has spoken about extending childcare services through increasing preschool hours, but the length of time this will take his Department is concerning.
“Daycare providers, childminders and the sector as a whole are crying out for progress. “Childcare is an absolutely vital service which helps support frontline workers and fundamentally gives workers and families a break and it must be prioritised.
“I am calling on the Minister to prioritise the work needed to move the Childcare Strategy forward and to work closely with his Executive colleagues to ensure it happens.”
