Derry republicans will mark a significant milestone next week when the 30th anniversary of Derry Volunteers Dinner takes place.
Commenting on the significance of the event, Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney said: “This is always a special occasion for republicans as we gather to remember the fallen Volunteers of Derry Brigade Óglaigh na hEireann and to pay tribute to their families.
“The first Derry Volunteers Dinner held back in 1990 saw over 700 republican activists gather in Ballybofey and it was a massive event, made all the more remarkable by the fact that the conflict was still raging at that time.
“On that occasion, Martin Mc Guinness presented the families of our fallen comrades with a statue of Cu Cuhlainn in recognition of their sacrifice.
“Each year since, we have gathered at various venues but with the same objective to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those Volunteers who laid down their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom.
“The occasion has also served as an opportunity to honour republican activists who have made a significant contribution over the years and that tradition will continue at the 30thanniversary event.
“This year’s dinner takes place in the City Hotel on Friday, June 28th when, once again, we will be joined by the families of our fallen comrades and It is our intention to have hundreds of republicans in attendance to show solidarity with them.
“The dinner will be one of a number of events taking place over the course of the weekend, all of which are aimed at remembering and honouring those who have played a role in the struggle.
“The annual Book of Remembrance event will take place on Saturday 29th at 3pm in Ráth Mór when the names of republicans who have passed away over the course of the last year will be added to the book. And on Sunday, the 30th at 1pm, the annual commemorative march takes place from Central Drive to the City Cemetery to honour the fallen Volunteers of Derry Brigade Óglaigh na hEireann. This year’s event will also feature a rededication of the republican plot in the cemetery.
“As ever, we encourage all republicans to make the effort to come along and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom.”
