Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has called for the implementation of a disclosure scheme to help keep people safe and better protected from domestic violence.
The party’s Justice spokesperson was speaking after attending the the launch of La Dolce Vita’s “Just and Fair” campaign event in the Long Gallery at Stormont.
Raymond McCartney said:
“Men and women continue to suffer horrendous forms of violence and abuse every single day in our communities.
“In March of this year proposals were introduced regarding a domestic violence disclosure scheme along the same lines as Clare’s law.
“This disclosure scheme should help keep people safe and better protected from the scourge of domestic violence.
“It’s important that the scheme is now implemented and people are made aware of the scheme and how it works.
“The PSNI also need to have substantial training in place to deal with the disclosure scheme and to identify perpetrators here and in other jurisdictions.
“There is no doubt that as a society we need a step change in our approach to tackling domestic violence and abuse.
“Raising awareness, tackling domestic violence and ensuring that women and children are supported in every way possible is a key priority for for Sinn Féin.” CRÍOCH/ENDS
