Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has called for Covid-19 testing to be extended to volunteers working as part of the community response to the pandemic.
The local Health Spokesperson said:
“We have all seen the amazing work being carried out right across the city and district by teams of volunteers to support communities in the fight against Covid-19.
“They our helping people who have had to self-isolate, unable to get out of their homes and for many are a key point of contact at this time.
“These people are all doing invaluable work and it’s essential that they are able to carry it out safely.
“It’s my belief that as a matter of urgency, the Health Minister should offer community volunteers the facility of being tested for Covid-19.
“The lack of testing means the possibility that the true scale of the crisis here is unknown.
“The World Health Organisation has told us continuously that key to overcoming Covid-19 is test, trace and isolate.
“This is an unprecedented crisis and we need an unprecedented response to protect public health and help save lives.”
