Speaking after engaging with the EU Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič at a meeting of the Assembly’s Executive Office Committee, Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson welcomed the Commissioner’s unwavering support for the Good Friday Agreement.
The Foyle MLA said;
“I am delighted that the Vice-President confirmed that the EU remains totally committed to the Good Friday Agreement, and is prepared to take bold steps to find flexible solutions to implement the protocol.
“He also noted his intention to bring forward plans for an investment conference for the north, continuing to work through existing trade difficulties and maintaining contact with the Executive Committee in Stormont.
“The commissioner additionally confirmed that he expects an imminent agreement on chilled meats with the British Government has today come to a new data protection agreement.
“Brexit means there is still a huge democratic deficit unless the north has representation in the EU.
“It is more essential than ever that the EU explores appointing observer MEPs to the north of Ireland to bridge the gap between now and when the north returns to full EU membership through a United Ireland.”
