Factory sculpture a step closer- McLaughlin

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed the news that sculptor  Louise Walsh has received a letter of offer from the Department of Social Development to state that  funding has been approved in respect of the redesign of the public art work to RIBA design stage D.

Maeve McLaughlin said

“It is great to see that we are moving in the right direction in regards to getting all the issues around the sculpture resolved. This has been a very long and protracted process and credit must go to the artist and all those local campaigners who worked tirelessly to ensure that this project happens.

“I feel it’s very important that this project goes ahead .The sculpture will be a fitting historical tribute to all those women in Derry who worked in the shirt factories in very harsh conditions and for little pay. Women were the backbone of the economy in Derry at a time when there were no jobs for local men and there was great poverty in our city. We need to pay tribute to their contribution and to the life and history of Derry.
