Families have received neither truth nor justice – McCartney

Sinn Féin justice spokesperson Raymond McCartney has said the families of those killed and injured by self-confessed UVF killer and police agent Gary Haggarty have received neither truth nor justice.

The Foyle MLA was speaking as Gary Haggarty’s sentence was reduced from 35 to six-and-a-half years.

Raymond McCartney said:

“The families have received neither truth nor justice. Gary Haggarty pleaded guilty to over 200 offences, including five murders, all of which were committed while working as a police informer.

“This reduced sentence means that he is effectively getting away with murder.

“But families are also being denied the truth around allegations that Haggarty’s RUC Special Branch may have ignored warnings about murder and may have covered up his involvement in murders and attempted murders over many years.

“The scale of collusion in this case is appalling.

“The British government continue to block the establishment of agreed mechanisms to deal with the past and refuse to fund legacy inquests precisely because they do not want the world to know the truth of their involvement with killers like Gary Haggarty.”
