Following confirmation that the Boundary Commission has today submitted its final recommendations report to the British Government, Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has said that controversial plans to redraw electoral boundaries should be scrapped.
The Foyle MLA commented: “The Boundary Commission has now submitted its Final Recommendations Report to the British Government and it is expected this could be published next week.
“The report follows a consultation process in which thousands of submissions were lodged strongly objecting to proposed new electoral boundaries.
“Sinn Féin was not surprised at such an overwhelming response given the anger that has been palpable within the nationalist community. Our offices have been inundated with voters furious at what they see as an attempt to gerrymander electoral boundaries, given that the proposed new boundaries very closely resemble an earlier DUP submission and would see at least four constituencies left with no nationalist representative whatsoever.
“Such overwhelming opposition cannot be ignored and we will know when the report is published whether they have revised their plans in line with their remit to distribute the electorate in a fair and equitable way across the new constituencies.”
