Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Karen Mullan MLA has called on the Department of Education to finalise a plan to ensure substitute teachers can be paid as quickly as possible.
The Foyle MLA said:
”When schools were closed substitute teachers who were working on a day to day basis lost their ability to earn through no fault of their own.
”Sinn Féin have been clear from the outset that our priority is to not only save lives but to protect livelihoods as well.
”Substitute teachers play a pivotal role in the day-to-day running of schools across the north and we firmly believe they should be protected throughout this crisis.
”Today at the Education Committee I challenged the Education Minister to make greater progress on providing protections for our substitute teachers.
”There is no reason to delay. I encouraged the Minister to make payments based on individuals’ average earnings as soon as possible.
”I want to assure those substitute teachers that are affected that I will be in regular contact with the Department on this issue as we seek an urgent resolution.” Ends/Críoch
