Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly has commended the quick actions of the Fire Service on Saturday afternoon for preventing a fire spread on a large green area adjacent to the Beechwood Steps and homes at Beechwood Avenue /Westend Terrace.
Councillor Colly Kelly said
“I received a number of phone calls from local residents on Saturday afternoon to say the green area beside the steps at Beechwood Steps was on fire. The air was filled with thick smoke and a large area of the green space there was on fire.
Thankfully the Fire Service was on the scene very quickly and the fire was extinguished.
The ground has been dry for the last few days and this fire could have spread very quickly as there is a lot of shrubbery and trees around the steps and within yards of homes on Beechwood Aveune , Westend Terrace.
Apart from diverting valuable resources from the Fire Service on a busy Saturday afternoon , lives could be at risk as this type of fire tends to travel quickly disorientating people with their huge smoke plumes therefore trapping them and putting their lives at danger.
