Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper called for a review of opening times of the play park in the Glen area of the city following being inundated with complaints that large groups of youths were causing a disturbance there setting off fireworks and subsequent problems this was creating for local residents at the weekend.
Councillor Cooper said “I was contacted by a number of residents with complaints that large groups of youths were congregating at the park in the Glen causing disturbances there and setting off fireworks. There is a lot of fear and concern in the local community particularly as residents told me at times the groups of teenagers can be big ,and with big groups its bring noise ,fear and add to that letting of fireworks can be quite intimidating .
There isn’t going to be an easy answer to resolve this, my party colleague Kevin Campbell had similar problems with fireworks being let off in a park in Creggan last week.
Over the weekend I have been in touch with the community wardens,PSNI and residents who contacted me.I have suggested that it would be a good idea to get this park closed early over the weekend as it could alleviate the safety concerns for young children.
