Speaking ahead of the Regional Services meeting at Derry City Council meeting with the Housing Executive on Tuesday Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Councillor Tony Hassan has renewed his call on the Housing Executive and the Department of Social Development to publicly state the number of people on the waiting list for social homes in the Derry City Council area.
“Current figures are showing that per head of the population the west bank of the city has the highest numbers of people on the waiting list for social homes with over 3,400 people looking for a home of their own, and that number is growing each day.
It is totally unacceptable that the number of new builds of social housing in this city is not enough to stop the extent of the housing crisis here.Over 400 people are in temporary accommodation, some in private accommodation and others living in overcrowded conditions.
Everyone who works with the homeless, including the statutory housing agencies, knows that the number of new builds that are planned for the city is not enough to tackle the overgrowing problem.
