Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has said the health minister needs to sign off on the medical school for Magee without further delay.
The Foyle MLA said:
“Now more than ever the need to train and retain more doctors in the north west is clear and the best way to do that is through a medical school at Magee.
“Responsibility for that rests, in the first instance, with the Minister for Health so he needs make that decision as a matter of urgency.”
Karen Mullan also criticised the SDLP for petty politicking rather than building unity on the issue.
The Sinn Féin MLA said:
“There is a united voice in this city calling for the establishment of this much-needed medical school.
“It is essential we maintain that unity and refrain from negative and counter-productive point scoring. For Ms McLaughlin’s information, Sinn Féin unambiguously supports the Magee medical school and our Ministers in the Executive are fully committed to delivering this project.
“Her party is also represented at the Executive table where we need collective leadership to ensure this project is taken forward urgently. The first step is sign-off by the Health Minister. That’s where Ms McLaughlin should direct her attention”.
