Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Councillor Tony Hassan has welcomed the proposed development of hundreds of new private homes in Derry that were approved and passed by Derry/Strabane Planning Committee this week.
Councillor Hassan said,
I welcome the development of these private new homes in the Culmore and Waterside areas of the city. It sends out the message that the housing market is picking up again in the city and will allow first time buyers a chance to get on to the housing ladder.
It’s also important to stress that there is a need for more social homes to be built as the waiting lists here are growing each day.
The need for social house building in the city is still at a very high level.
The points you need for a social home is in the 190s, and when the different phases of building social homes stops, the points for a home will go sky high again meaning many young families sitting on 140/150 housing points will find it very difficult to get a home of their own.
