Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy, speaking after a meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration has welcomed the addition of protecting the native Black Bees to the Green Infrastructure Action Plan for the area, following her proposal.
She said “The Council will now incorporate the All Ireland Pollination Plan into its own plan with special consideration given to the North West becoming a special conservation area for the Native Black Bee.
“It will look at bee friendly planting policies, looking at wild flower planting on our roadsides and roundabouts.
Speaking after the meeting Councillor Duffy paid tribute to the work being carried out by the Derry City Bee Keepers in protecting our Bees, providing educational programmes both in local schools and the apiary situated at Brooke park.
Concluding she said “We have invited this group in to speak to the Council and I look forward to hearing more about their work.
