Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the international community must to do more to support Palestinian statehood.
Ms Anderson said;
“This week was the 99th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration in which the British government gave its support for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine.
“The declaration, however, also states that ‘nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.’
“In this aspect they have failed as the civil, religious and human rights of the Palestinian people have been attacked and eroded ever since.
“The international community have a duty and a responsibility to support the people of Palestine and challenge Israeli human rights abuses.
“They need to step up to the plate and proactively show their support for Palestinian statehood.”
