Jackson slams Israeli restrictions on Omar Barghouti

Sinn Féin Councillor Christopher Jackson has slammed Israel’s arbitrary travel restrictions on the prominent Palestinian human rights defender and ‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’ (BDS) co-founder, Omar Barghouti.

The party’s Internnational spokesperson said:

“Omar Barghouti is an internationally renowned human rights advocate who works tirelessly to hold Israel accountable for human rights and international law violations.

“Omar has been the subject of numerous threats and acts of harassment for a number of years. In 2016, an Israeli minister called for ‘targeted civil eliminations’ of BDS leaders with the help of Israeli intelligence.

“Omar holds an Israeli travel document allowing him to leave and return to the country. However, despite an Israeli District Court stating there was no reason to refuse to renew Omar’s travel documents, he is still under a de facto travel ban with no substantial reason given.

“Sinn Féin condemns these Israeli actions and call on them to immediately lift the travel ban and cease their relentless campaign of harassment on Omar Barghouti.

“All Israeli aggression needs to be exposed. Israel cannot and will not silence the voice of the Palestinian people.

“The international community have much to learn from Omar Barghouti, and other Palestinian representatives, and they need to act in defence of the Palestinian people, upholding their legitimate rights to Independence and Statehood.”
