Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin speaking following the announcement that B&Q are set to close its store on the Buncrana Road Derry.
There were concerns raised back in April when it was first announced that B&Q were undergoing a restructuring process and the subsequent impact that could have on future of the Derry store.
Today’s confirmation that the store on the Buncrana Road is set to close along with four other stores across the north is a blow to the local workforce. With the nearest store to Derry being kept open in Coleraine it would make it totally impractical in financial terms for anyone wishing to take up any offer of seeking relocation.
In the current climate these job losses are a blow to the workers and their families and increases pressure on attempts to build economic stability.
It’s very important above all that workers’ rights and entitlements are protected.”
