Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has hailed Irish boxer Katie Taylor after she successfully defended her WBA world lightweight title with a unanimous points victory over American Jessica McCaskill.
Sandra Duffy who is also the secretary of St Joseph’s ABC based in the Galliagh area of the city said
“This is a great achievement by Katie.
Katie is an inspiration to many young boxers in Derry and across Ireland, she has encouraged many girls to join the world or boxing.
Boxing is a big sport in this city and many people work away behind the scenes to provide a positive outlet for our young people.
During the year of City of Culture the then Culture Minister Minister Carál Ní Chuilín gave a £1million injection of funds for boxing in the then Derry City Council Area as part of the legacy from the yearlong celebration .
So once again well done Katie and hopefully it will attract more young people into the sport locally.
