Kelly backs legal challenge to equal marriage ban

Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly has called for equal marriage rights to be extended to the North.

Speaking ahead of two couples going to court to seek a judicial review of the North’s equal marriage ban, he said;

“Sinn Féin wants to see an equal society for everyone, regardless of their sexuality, gender, religion or anything else.

“Marriage equality threatens no one and sends out clear message that discrimination will not be tolerated.

“The recent referendum in the South shows the level of support for equal marriage.

“The North now is in the shameful position of being the only part of these islands which does not have marriage equality.

“It simply does not make sense to deny gay couples the right to marry in Derry or Belfast while gay couples can marry in Dublin.

“It is beyond time that equal marriage rights are extended to couples right across the island.”
