Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris was in the city this week to launch a new book Irelands Hunger For Justice remembering all 22 Republicans who died on hunger strike from Thomas Ash in 1917 right up to Mickey Devine from Derry in 1981.
The Kerry TD announced at the recent Sinn Féin Ard Fheis he was to retire from office with Gerry Adams at the next Dail election.
Speaking to a packed audience in the Ráth Mór offices in Creggan at the launch he said he was “honoured” to be launching the book in Derry and paid tribute to the late Martin McGuiness.
It was very important that this book was written to ensure that the memory of the twenty two hunger strikers was not forgotten. Earlier this year a committee was set up in Kerry to research and pull all the various aspects of the book together, it was mighty task but we got there in the end.
From Thomas Ashe in 1917 to Bobby Sands and his nine other comrades in 1981 all parts of the world rightly uphold and recognise their sacrifice .All these years later, the Irish hungers-strikes continue to inspire the down –trodden, the oppressed and those who struggle for justice and freedom in Ireland and across the world.
