Lights out at Glengalliagh danger spot added to 2500 list

Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has said the refusal by the Minister for the Department of Regional Development Danny Kennedy to repair street /road lights is putting the lives of motorists and pedestrians at risk.

 Councillor Hassan said

DRD Roads service told me last week that there are now over 2,500 street/road lights out of order in the Derry City Council area. I believe that the Minister needs to review the current policy of not fixing these lights .We need to put the safety of road users and pedestrians first before we could end up in a tragedy.

There have been a number of accidents at the entrance of Northside shopping centre the latest just a few days before Christmas. From Northside to Leafair Park ten road lights have out for over the last two weeks. Many in the community are very concerned at the dangers for a main  arterial route such as the Glengalliagh Road area being  plunged into  darkness.

The Minister needs to resolve this as a matter of urgency.
