Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Councillor Patricia Logue has welcomed an initiative this week to light up the Council offices on the Strand Road in the colour of purple to support the campaign to highlight global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign.
Councillor Logue said “This is an excellent initiative at local level. It’s very important that we highlight and tackle all forms of violence, abuse and discrimination against women.
Despite the progress that women have made in all parts of society there are still millions of women and young girls who are suffering horrendous forms of violence, abuse and discrimination because of their sex.
More needs to be done to challenge the culture of discrimination that allows women and young girls to be raped, beaten, trafficked and mutilated on a daily basis.
All of us have a part to play by raising awareness of these crimes and calling on governments to ensure they are taking the necessary steps to eradicate gender based violence.
