Sinn Féin MLA and Joint First Minister Martin McGuinness said that the arrest of party leader Gerry Adams was politically motivated.
Speaking today Martin McGuinness said:
“I’m very proud that Gerry Adams is my colleague, my friend and my party leader.
“I have been very close to the peace process over 20 years and in my opinion Gerry Adams is the single most important person in bringing about the transformation, which has taken us to where we are today.
“In that context I view his arrest as a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of the elections due to take place all over this island in three weeks.
“That raises very serious questions about the agenda of those responsible.
“There are people on the dark side of policing and this is an attempt to flex their muscles.
“These people are responsible for this latest situation.”
