Sinn Féin Councillor, Elisha McCallion has welcomed the launch by Health Minister, Michelle O’Neill of a consultation strategy on suicide prevention.
Cllr McCallion said:
“I welcome this announcement by my party colleague Health Minister Michelle O’Neill in launching Protect Life 2 a consultation process on suicide prevention.
“The strategy aims to improve the identification and response to suicidal behaviour in order to assist in preventing incidents of suicide.
“In particular it will focus on repeat self-harm as well as supporting those bereaved by suicide.
“An average of 274 people die by suicide each year across the North.
“This is unacceptable as behind these statistics is the tragedy of loss of life and the grief of real people, families who are hurting and lives shattered.
“I would encourage people to realise that it’s OK not to be OK and to speak to someone, and seek advice from their GP if they have concerns about their mental wellbeing.
“There are a number of local Counselling Services in Derry but if you are in immediate distress or despair you can contact the Lifeline Helpline on 0808 808 8000 at any time.
“Sinn Féin will continue to engage with the Minister for Health, mental health and suicide prevention groups and statutory stakeholders on these issues to develop a comprehensive and inclusive all-Ireland strategy on mental health and suicide prevention.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
