Speaking following a rally organised by Sinn Féin in the Guildhall Square on Saturday afternoon Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said
“The killings of 16 Palestinians and the wounding of hundreds more by the Israeli military must be totally condemned.
“Palestinians were taking part in legitimate protests at the border when they were fired upon by the Israeli military.
“Statements from the Israeli military are reminiscent of those of the British army after the murders on Bloody Sunday.
“What happened in Gaza was nothing short of a massacre and the international community needs to act to prevent further loss of life and respond with robust action against Israel.
“There is a responsibility on the international community and the EU in particular to defend Palestinians and to challenge Israeli aggression.”
“I echo the words of our party Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD who has called on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to move to recognise the State of Palestine and to expel the Israeli ambassador following the massacre of sixteen Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli military.
