McCartney commends courage and determination of Ballymurphy families

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has commended the courage and determination of the Ballymurphy families whose loved ones were shot dead by the British Army in August 1971.

The party’s Justice spokesperson was commenting as the families attend the High Court in Belfast for the beginning of the inquest hearing.

Speaking this morning Raymond McCartney said:

“Today’s hearing is another step forward for the families in their long campaign to establish the truth of what happened in Ballymurphy in 1971.

“I understand this is a difficult time for these families on what already has been a 47 year long road and I want to commend their courage and determination.

“The massacre in Ballymurphy that was carried out by the British Parachute Regiment came just five months prior to the murder by that same regiment of 14 civil rights marchers in Derry.

“Sinn Féin will continue to support the Ballymurphy Families in their campaign for truth and justice.”
