Sinn Féin Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile recently secured unanimous support for a motion in the Seanad calling on the Irish Government to appeal this judgement at the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

Speaking today Raymond  McCartney  said;

“This is a welcome announcement on the part of the Irish Government and I have no doubt that it will be received positively by the surviving Hooded Men and the families of those no longer with us.

“The judgement in the Hooded Men case has live, global implications and it is only right that those who have committed, are committing or would seek to commit the kind of torture inflicted on these fourteen Irishmen, are exposed and held to account on the international stage.

“This appeal will now be heard by a panel of five judges who will consider its progression to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

“The Irish Government have made the right decision with this appeal and I encourage them, as this appeal process moves ahead, to ensure they remain fully engaged with the men themselves as well as their legal representatives.

“The Hooded Men have been campaigning for truth and justice for almost fifty years now, their steadfast courage and dignity is renowned the world over; we know that what these men endured was systematic and calculated torture, it is long passed time that that reality was held firm on the international stage.”
