Sinn Fein MLA Martin McGuinness has welcomed an impassioned plea from former SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP for a ‘Remain’ vote in the Euro referendum on June 23rd.
The Foyle MLA was speaking after the Scottish independence leader addressed a Chamber of Commerce event in Derry today.
Mr McGuinness said;
“Alex Salmond is someone who has been a friend to Ireland and a friend to the peace process for a very long time.
“And when someone like him warns about the negative impact of a Brexit vote on the institutions and constitutional arrangements of the various peace agreements, there is an onus on us to listen.
“The fact is that a Brexit vote would be bad for Derry and bad for Ireland, bad for business and trade, bad for our farmers and bad for human rights and workers rights.
“It would effectively turn back the clock by returning physical borders to Ireland.
“We have worked to remove borders, both physical in terms of checkpoints at border crossings, as well as others barriers to trade across the island.
“So I want to thank Alex Salmond for taking the time to come to Derry and the Chamber of Commerce for inviting him. His is a very important voice in a very important debate.” Ends/Críoch
