Sinn Féin Councillor Aileen Mellon has welcomed an update from the Department of Education that they plan to develop proposals for the Curriculum Sports Programme in 2019/20.
The party’s local Education spokesperson said:
“I welcome news that the Department, the GAA and IFA plan to revitalise and refresh the programme and that both organisations have agreed to provide proposals for a full year programme to commence, subject to funding becoming available.
“Sinn Féin vigorously opposed the decision to cut the Sports Development Programme and stated that children and young people should not bear the brunt of Tory austerity.
“We repeatedly highlighted the damaging impact cutting the programme would have on local schools and to the tens of thousands of children who benefit from this funding.
“Sinn Féin will be meeting with the Permanent Secretary to ensure that the revitalising and refreshing of the programme remains a priority.”
