Michael holds triple degrees from the University of Ulster in Irish History & Politics and Computing. A well-known tour guide in the city, with a passion for preserving local history, he has also played a leading role in  building the tourism and social economy sectors in the greater Bogside area, which in turn has created much needed employment opportunities. 

Michael has played a prominent role for Sinn Féin on the issues of University expansion at Magee, growing the digital economy in Derry and the development of the tourism product especially in community areas. 

Michael has worked tirelessly to resolve constituency issues in areas of the city such as Killea, Bogside, Rosemount, Aberfoyle, Strand, lower Culmore Road and Pennyburn and has served on a number of bodies including ERNACT, Walled City Partnership and the board of City of Culture. He is also a board member at North West Regional College which is aligned to his work as an accredited trainer and his role in developing new community education and creative industry training programmes in collaboration with DCAl, DEL and other training organisations.
