Mullan backs effort to solve emergency accommodation crisis

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has backed efforts to find a solution to the lack of proper support for vulnerable people who are being placed in temporary accommodation.

Speaking after hosting a meeting of the key agencies including the Housing Executive, PSNI, Community Restorative Justice (CRJ) and government departments, the Foyle MLA said:

“I have been working with residents and agencies on concerns about the lack of appropriate support for vulnerable people in temporary accommodation in B&Bs and hotels in the city for a year now.

“This week, I brought together all the local agencies, including the Housing Executive, the police and government departments, to find a solution.

“I made it clear that these vulnerable people should be in appropriate accommodation with properly trained staff to ensure they receive the support that they need.

“This has also been a concern for residents living nearby due to rising levels of anti-social behaviour around the temporary accommodation.

“Our focus now is on ensuring proper support is put in place for these vulnerable people and I welcome the continued effort of the Housing Executive to increase facilities to properly support them.” Críoch/Ends
