Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has joined the Assembly’s all-party group on Autism.
The party’s Education spokesperson has also called on the Department of Education and the Education Authority to provide extra resources and provision for special educational needs, particularly for children with autism.
Karen Mullan said:
“I am delighted to have formally joined the Assembly’s all-party group on Autism. Since entering the role of MLA, I have been working with groups, families and children with autism and special educational needs.
“All of those families have highlighted the need for greater provision and support for their children. I have previously sought assurances from the Education Authority that there will be improvements in assessments, classroom assistants and early years intervention.
“There is an increase in the prevalence of children and adults being diagnosed with autism and other educational needs and schools need to be better equipped to deal with the needs of pupils with special educational needs and autism.
“Special educational needs provision is a priority for Sinn Féin. We have argued the case for investment in resources to provide support to SEN children and young people. Sinn Féin will continue to work with families and support groups to ensure they get the assistance they need.”
